From 2004 it was made unlawful, for those providing services directly to the public, to do so on different
terms to a disabled (blind / partially sighted) person. In short, this means more and more businesses and
organisations are having to become DDA compliant by installing Braille & Tactile Signs. Braille & tactile
signs are designed to be used by blind, partially sighted people and normally sighted people.
They looks similar to a normal sign, but some subtle differences as shown below.
DDA 1995 has now been updated with the Equality Act 2010
The features above allow partially sighted people to see or follow the the raised lettering or graphics.
The braille is used by the blind when using the sign. The position on the wall is also very important in
terms of position. (See Below)

Rules Of Unified English Braille 2013:- PDF (01256)
1. The Substrate should have a
matt non reflective finish.
2. The lettering should
be embossed. (Raised)
And 15 mm + in height.
3. The left edge should
have a Braille Locator.
4. Directly under the wording there should be raised braille dots.
